Family is so important and sharing things with your loved ones is a great way of connecting with them. Sharing a recipe, giving some hand-me-downs, lending a hand, giving support are all ways of saying “you are important to me” and they help to strengthen family bonds and relationships.
This recipe was given to me by my sister-in-law and it’s become one of our family favorites for picnics, celebrations and whenever a special salad is required. It’s not a modern salad and there are many versions of this out there – “it’s an oldie but a goody” as they say and will be on the menu at our family’s Australia Day picnic again this year. To not take it would be sacrilege.
The Layered Garden Salad does take some preparation, but it’s well worth it and some of the preparation can be done before time. After all, Australia Day should be about relaxing and spending time with family and friends

Layered Garden Salad
Layered Garden Salad is an "oldie but a goodie" -one of those salads that gets requested time and time again at all the family get togethers.
Instructions
Using a glass or clear bowl, place ingredients in layers in the following order so that you can see the layers through the sides of the bowl:
Peas
Lettuce
Asparagus
Boiled eggs
Grated cheese
In a small bowl, mix together the sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, chives, salt and pepper. At this point, taste the dressing and adjust according to your own taste
Spread the dressing over the top of the salad
Sprinkle the diced bacon in the middle of the salad and place the tomato wedges around the edge of the salad
Enjoy
This salad will keep in the fridge for a couple of days but is probably best eaten on the day
